Pancreaticoduodenectomy on Benign Disease

Abstract
Between January 1981 and June 1991, 14 patients(11.8%) underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy for benign disease among total 119 patients of pancreaticoduodenectomy, Preoperative diagnosis were malignant except two case of trauma and leiomyoma of
duodenum.
82% of benign lesion on preoperative tissue biopsy revealed malignant disease and 40% of benign lesion on intraoperative frozen tissue biopsy revealed malignant disease. There was one operative mortality by trauma among 14 case and other were
well-being
state without complication. (mean follow-up; 34.0 months).
Recently, operative mortality and prognosis of pancreaticoduodenectomy is improved, and good long term prognosis is suspected for benign disease. When the lesion is not revealed malignancy in spite of efforts during preoperative and
intraoperative
peroid, clinical finding is important for deciding operation method. Pancreaticoduodenectomy can be performed for treatment of suspected malignancy and treatment of benign disease, especially chronic pancreatitis on pancreatic head portion.
